When Can We Fairly Compare Treatment Outcomes Across U.S. States?

Can we fairly compare substance-use treatment outcomes across U.S. states? Looking at an analysis of TEDS Admission and Discharge data across two large states (TX and CA) and six years (2018-2023) illustrates some interesting differences in outcomes and in treatment populations. For example, Texas has a notably higher treatment completion rate and posts alcohol addiction as the primary admission reason, compared to methamphetamine for California. Overall use frequency improvement is much higher in California. Nevertheless, a deeper dive into the data shows more intriguing findings. This report is a peek at the nuances of treatment between these two states. The report is built natively in Power BI with all-DAX analytics — chi-square, Cramér's V, transition matrices, dose-response curves.
